If you read my story of how me, a grown woman, did not returning to physical therapy after my very youthful (and smart) Physical Therapist who helped me rebound after throwing my back out called me SUSPICIOUS — and you wanted more — I have good news!!! We have a follow up!
Here is a quick recap:
After my sixth appointment, as I was finishing up my last moves, sweating and quietly swearing, the therapist looks at me and says, “You know what Emily… your personality is really suspicious.” The aid says, “Yes. Totally suspicious.” Some other random patient working out near me says “I think you seem nice!” and I quickly say, “Well, I guess you’re my new best friend.” I grabbed my coffee and basically ran out of the gym.
I could not make heads nor tails of being called suspicious, but I did know that it made me feel bad. I cried. I talked about it in therapy.
Did I take my (emotional) therapists advice and directly ask the PT what she meant? Have a grown woman conversation including my feelings? Nah. Ultimately, I never returned for another session with her. Duh.
But I did tell Deanna the story of this gorgeous example of why we all need How to Be Less Old, and she said, “lets text a youth and get her take,” because turns out DEANNA’S A GOSH DARN GENIUS.
Now, if you’re like me, you are thinking my PT found something about me to be questionable or dishonest seeming. Another word that comes to mind is disingenuous. If this were back in the day it would be equivalent to my PT saying.. “You know what, Emily? You’re fake.” And I’m all…FAKE? ME? SIKE!
So, clearly we needed 16-year-old Lilah’s assessment of my interaction with the PT. Fair warning, after this exchange something unexpected happened.
