Pump Like a Model
Plus, are the latest girlfriend robots real? 👩🏽🦳🤖
Have you seen this month’s Allure magazine cover? It’s stunning.
The moment it hit my feed, I felt fed. We’ve been starved for models modeling and real artistic vision. I know no one buys magazines anymore (this cover is digital-only), but my god, do I miss an arresting cover. To test my theory that we’re in a visual cover drought, I looked up Vogue’s 2025 covers.
I’m bored to tears. Where’s the art? Where’s the vision? March and April even recycled the same head tilt + hands-in-hair pose!
Not only did Allure serve a cover, they also graced our ‘stack with a new term. In Allure’s spill the tea game, models Alex Consani and Anok Yai Raise casually dropped the term pump.
They were both gagged by the question:
Be honest, between the two of us who has the best runway walk?
Alex: Cuz you can pump.
Anok: Bitch - you can pump.
Together: We can pump.
Anok: We can pump. We can pump down.
What was your best runway?
Alex: I’m a Dsquared girl, I feel like I always get to pump.
Based on the context clues - pump means - owning the runway. Making your presence felt. Stomping down. But you are going to be hard pressed to find this explanation in a basic google search. So I made my way over to TikTok and found that pump is a reference from the queer ballroom scene.
The always polarizing, Azealia Banks references “pumping the runway”…
