Sailing into the weekend feeling a touch unsettled. The high I was riding post DNC is wearing thin. The Diddler diaries have been cracked open, Melania’s out peddling her book and a third world war feels closer than ever. With the reality of the election happening in a mere 38 days it feels like the right time to make an astute observation —- mustaches have having a moment.
Not only are mustaches front and center but they are working in a way (at least for me) that they haven’t worked since the fiery Tom Selleck days.
I became mustache-aware on Sept 11th, Patriot Day and the night of the VMAs, when a Benson Boone performed his hit song “Beautiful Things.” Benson was wearing a glittering blue, belted, onesie and an oddly appealing mustache.
Great song, great voice and really, really great mustache. Plus, he did a full jump-tuck-n-roll off the piano. Maybe the best performance of the night. At the very least, he tied with Chappell and Sabrina.

Couple of fun facts about Benson —
He tried out for American Idol back in 2021 when he was only 18. During his audition Benson told the judges that he’d only recently discovered that he could sing — surprise! Katy Perry predicted he’d win the entire season. Which he very well may have but we’ll never know because he quit the show. He was top 19 at the time.
In his conversation with podcaster Zach Sang, Benson said: “The reason that I quit American Idol is because I wanted to do music. I decided that I wanted to do music, and I don't want people to be like, 'Oh Benson Boone. American Idol blew him up.’
Benson bet on himself and it paid off! You just love to see it. Now, the mustache was a more recent addition but it also seems like a big swing that is working out in his favor.
After watching Benson on the VMAs, my husband and I were clocking Benson look-a-likes here, there and everywhere (aka Glassell Park + Highland Park). The Cheng household is calling it the Benson-effect.
