Did you guys watch the Olympic closing ceremony? Paris did a “hand off” to Los Angeles 2028, and immediately we are given a bizarre look at not only what the world thinks of Los Angeles — but what LA thinks of itself.
The gorgeous and alluring Prince protege H.E.R. is singing the star spangled banner. And then Tom Cruise, who has been seen enjoying many Olympic events (by himself), does a classic Tom Cruise stunt.
Now, if you listened to our recent pod, or read my piece on my panic attack when I attempted a VERY similar move as Tom, you will know that it was not EASY for him (or me) to jump from the top of a building to the floor of the Paris stadium.
But he does it with more grace and far less tears than me, then jumps onto a motorcycle with the olympic flag and takes off out of the stadium. We then switch to a pre-recorded stunt of Tom Cruise driving the motorcycle onto a plane, jumping out of said plane over the Hollywood hills, altering the Hollywood sign to include additional OOOs for the Olympics.
Then begins a relay race with the olympic flag carried by olympians and joined by regular old ya-yah’s who transport the flag all the way out to the beach where the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, and Snoop and Dre perform.
It was when Anthony Kiedis, donning a boot on his presumably broken or sprained old man leg, pulled his net shirt over his face while singing that I felt how cheesy it all seemed on the heels of what appeared to be such a classy, artistic and tasteful couple weeks in Paris.
But really, who am I to judge? The truth is sometimes we are all Anthony Kiedis in this exact moment: Being cool and trying to be cool and in a state of just being old. (Minus the part where Anthony is 61 and dating a 19-year-old. That feels as right as rain to judge! 🤮) Tom Cruise felt the same way! Simultaneously cool and trying too hard while old. Snoop and Dre? Chefs kiss, zero notes.
What did you think of it? Did it feel exciting and so LA?
Now on to something classier!
