So you just gave yourself a pat on the back for spotting the Millennial Pause in wild — well guess what? The Gen Z shake has entered-the-chat. The Millennial Pause is the brief beat a “mill” takes right before they speak to camera. It’s giving: Type A, thoughtful, LinkedIn, try-hard, early retirement, hydrated, exfoliated and nutrient rich.
The Gen Z shake is the back and forth motion of the camera accompanied by immediate talking. A “z” is so eager to share something with their followers that they are jumping on camera. No tripod setup, no rehearsed dialogue and of course no pause. It’s giving: frantic, digital native, pull-up socks, middle part, gender fluidity and Sephora sale.
This video from the social media marketing platform Loomly - demonstrates both.
But let’s take a good old-fashioned regular pause to get into some important sock talk! Emily pulls up her socks — for-the-plot!
Deanna here!
The ladies of Bitch Sesh/ Garbage World — Danielle Schneider and Casey Wilson invited me to spearhead a look-for-less episode featuring stylist-to-the-stars Abby Arad. We asked Abby about “sock.”
As we’ve discussed here on HTBLO the youths DESPISE seeing ankle. No-show socks give them the ick. *see #5
I asked Abby if we should attempt the high sock/sneaker trend the young girlies are rocking this summer. She suggested that we proceed with extreme caution. Many things have to line up correctly in order for it to work (on an adult).
This Daily Mail article: Controversial way to tell if a woman is a millennial or gen z by looking at her feet isn’t even including GenX in the conversation which ultimately releases us from the trend altogether. Yippeeee!
This week a Katie Holmes shoe/sock situation dropped in my lap. I ran it by Abby to get her professional thoughts.
I think it’s kind of cool but here’s why - it’s a sandal with a heel! Not a sneaker. ~Abby Arad
The look actually presents as a bootie - which does look cool! It’s operating at a high level. You need to know what the heck you’re doing in order to pull it off. Speaking of, were we all aware of Katie’s viral cashmere bralette moment back in 2019?
The actress was seen in New York hailing a taxi wearing an understatedly chic, yet comfortable, outfit, a matching beige cashmere bralette-and-cardigan combo from Khaite that swiftly sold out within an hour – and went on to become one of the most-searched for pieces of clothing of 2019.
Katie does look great in Khaite. This is Abby’s amazon shop if you’d like to swing through!
Speaking of Katie I was on the phone with a representative from Quickbooks who dumped some Scientology jargon on me during our call. Not sure if there’s anything else to say about it other than it was unexpected and thought you might like to know.
Emily here!
What does Abby mean by proceed with extreme caution? I can’t just throw on some crew socks and some shorts and get to living? I’m gonna need some more info here!
I stumbled across this video of a millennial trying to make sense of wearing the crew socks with a skirt. And it’s a strong relate.
But, extreme caution? Well, that sounds like a challenge! Now, I’m missing some key elements like cute crew socks, cute shorts and arguably cute shoes. But, I decided to slap on what I have to just see — how bad could it be?
I knew I needed to hit the grocery store at 7am, so I threw on the best I could slap together pre-coffee and then asked my 7-year-old daughter to take a quick pic.
And that’s when I gained understanding of Abby’s words. Things did not seem like they were going well. At all. I sent the image to Deanna who very kindly said, “Oh, she’s out here doing it! And looking gewddd.” But I think we both know, I was not doing it. Or looking gewddd. But that’s what friends are for!
I still ran to the store in this outfit and gave zero effs, because that is the gift of being GenX and not even being part of the conversation. P.S. you’re welcome for the chance to gaze upon my sexual gams.
But I have to wonder… Is there any world in which with the correct crew socks and shorts or skirt, could I make this happen? Katie Holmes looks cute in her sock/bootie lewk. Also, I definitely feel 100 percent okay in yoga pants with crew socks and athletic shoes, but could I confidently wear crew socks for (gulp) fashion? Do I even really know what “nailing” the look would look like? Do YOU know what nailing it looks like? Please comment below.
Deanna popping in to share that Abby did say the crew sock with a workout outfit or with sandal for a walk around the block was in the clear! Emily popping in to say PHEW.
