Earlier this month Emily and I identified what was hot and what was not. Inspired by our post, I decided to move matcha 🍵 off the page and into my life. Why should I be a running around as a not, and not a hot?

Our boots on the ground youth correspondent Emma W. (16) explained that matcha is the go-to beverage for many of her high school girlies. Gone are the days of getting jacked up on a Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee the size of your head. We no longer need sugar and caffeine coursing through our veins. Nowadays we are rested, we are moisturized and we are matcha’ing. We’re walking into school wearing UGG slippers, a cozy matching sweat set and sipping an iced matcha latte.

Some girls are making their matcha at home, while others are swinging by Erewhon. After the $20 single strawberry sitch, I was scared to see what Erewhon was charging for an iced matcha latte. To my surprise, it was a relatively reasonable $6. Emma seems to be both making and buying. She said that ceremonial grade matcha is a must if you’re making matcha at home. Gotta say, the ceremonial-grade-of-it-all is what I kept thinking about after our post. The idea of a proper midday, Japanese matcha ceremony - in my kitchen - sounded elevated. Lifting up my WFH vibrations.

When I asked Emma why matcha over coffee she said that matcha releases caffeine over time so you aren’t spiking up and then down. Plus, it’s a vibe.

I wondered if there was a difference between matcha and plain old green tea. According to Harvard Health matcha is a type of green tea —

Matcha is a type of green tea. It is grown in the shade, which has the effect of boosting the amount of certain phytochemicals (plant chemicals that offer a range of potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects), antioxidants, and other ingredients it contains compared to other types of green tea.

    • Matcha was found to reducing bad breath and can help relieve symptoms of gum disease.

  • Helps with weight loss

    • Due to its high concentration of catechins, particularly EGCG, it can boost metabolism and help burn fat. It’s also known to be an appetite suppressant.

Since I very much needed all of those benefits, I added a tin of ceremonial grade matcha and a matcha kit (bowl, whisk, sifter and scoop) to cart.
