Holding space to discuss the “Wicked” press tour. It has rivaled only “Barbie” in length and volume. “Barbie” gave us a never ending parade of pink dresses and “Wicked” is waterboarding us with emotion and tears. This Barbie-a-fied press tour timeline feels like the new blueprint for female-led blockbusters. You start pounding the pavement 12 months before the movie opens and you don’t stop until the general public begs for mercy.
The first trailer for “Wicked” ran during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb 11th 2024. 10 months ago. To put that into perspective, Kamala Harris had 3.5 months to pull a presidential campaign together. If it takes 10 months for Americans to want to buy tickets to a female-led movie it’s going to take at least that to put a female president in The White House. Kamala deserved the goddamn Barbie-a-fied timeline!
Meanwhile, the Marvel guys go on Kimmel, do a Subway Sandwich collab, slap their image on a 7-Eleven branded Slurpee and call it a day.
