Cyberdeck Summer!
Customizable technology is the latest trend. A cyberdeck is a custom-built, portable computer designed for a specific purpose, often featuring a distinct retro-futuristic or cyberpunk aesthetic. Here are few things we have learned about cyberdecks:
The go-to for parts to create your deck is Raspberrypi. Large tech brands like Apple have started encasing their components making them almost impossible to reuse, which should be cause for concern from an ecological standpoint, but also it goes against our autonomy as tech users. Basically, it’s not very punk rock.
The tech world has long been thought of as a man’s space, but cyberdecks seem to be incredibly popular among women, giving them opportunity and control to explore technology in creative and fashionable ways.
Retro and Y2K themed cyberdecks are on trend, and being built in clamshells or purse cases.
The movement is also very Anti-AI. By building a cyberdeck you have something you can control. Also, you are doing away with tracking and that cookie/cache life.

Driven by an interest in focused, portable tools, searches for “cyberdeck for music production“ and “reading“ have spiked. Breakout searches for “cyberdeck girly“ and “book“ styles show a growing focus on personal aesthetics and custom-built designs.
Maybe this will be a build your own cyberdeck kind of summer! At the very least we’d like to find a youth in our world who is crafting a deck! Who is with us?

This question was recently posed by the New York Times. And you know what? We’re listening. Back in it’s heyday the brand could pull celebrities like Madonna and Annie Leibowitz would be on speed dial for print campaigns, but for the past decade or more the brick and mortar stores across the country have been closing. The cool ad campaigns of yore are no more.
