Last week I was on the phone with a friend when her teenage daughter, let’s call her Liv, climbed into the car. I took this opportunity to grill Liv and find out what the kids are saying. She was all mine for twenty minutes and the findings were electric. ⚡
We started out with a nuanced banger.
AI or Bot - when someone does something that sounds or feels computer-generated.
Before Liv had the chance to explain the intricacies of the term to me, I was nodding and throwing out examples of how I imaged it would be used. “Oh, you’re a bot like you’re a Stepford Wife?”
My friend jumped in and explained the “Stepford Wife” reference. Liv indicated that we didn’t quite have it. She started to correct us when I thirstily blurted that Tom Cruise had “bot” energy!
Liv wasn’t exactly sure who Cruise was. (Burn)
She explained, you would use the term “bot” if mid conversation you said something awkward slash formal. That would be “so bot.”
The other day when Liv’s parents greeted each other in the driveway saying:
“Hello, honey how was your day?”
“My day was great, how was yours?”
Liv filed that under “bot” behavior. Okay, 2 terms down and 6 more to go!
Glitching Out - when you are overloaded and have a malfunction of some sort.
“Glitching out” is a close cousin to “bot.” Liv described a scenario where she turned to a pal and said “I’m so tired” and the pal responded “I am as well.” They immediately burst out laughing. The formality was silly to them. “I am as well” was giving big Bridgerton vibes. Might as well grab some tea and biscuits! Her friend “glitched out.”
Crash Out - when something makes you so angry that you want to shut down.
Back in our day “crashing out” meant crashing at a friend’s place after a night of partying. Throwing yourself on the couch and waking up disoriented and full of regret. Now it means something a bit different, which is probably for the better! It’s when you get super angry and overloaded. The article below describes that youths felt like they were “crashing out” around the election.
My friend piped in with a term she’s heard the teens throwing around. This may be my favorite —
Chalant - the opposite of nonchalant. A person who attempts to do something but it’s clunky and ineffective.
If being nonchalant is easy going, laid back and smooth, chalant is the opposite. If you are on the pickleball court boasting that your serve destroys and you whiff the ball, your friend might yell “How chalant of you.” Love this so much!
OD - overdoing it
Liv shared that she’s constantly telling her mom that she’s “OD.” Parents are always doing way too much, trying too hard — OD.
2016: Calling out anything that looks like it was from the year 2016
You might be asking yourself what even happened in 2016? Well, things like: Snapchat filters with the puppy ears, King Kylie lip kits, Tumbler girls etc. Apparently, 2016 left its mark on the youths and they can spot a 2016 moment from a mile away.
Finally, they love calling out a “millennial moment” spotted in the wild. For instance, they’ll see someone’s instagram bio and say, “Oh my god, this is the most millennial instagram bio.” It’s over expressive, not-funny, emoji-heavy, quirky and trying to be young. Millennials were the first digital natives and they are holding onto that title for dear life. Apparently, the Z generation has clocked them and are having a laugh at their expense.
Have you heard any of these terms! Which is your fav!
