TikTok has 1 billion estimated active users worldwide and 180 million US users. TikTok is a trendsetter, a star-maker and a marketplace. It’s a disrupter. It’s a place where people have found laughter and community. But where will all this energy go and how will users be affected?

Are the reasons for the ban legit?

In my opinion, there are legitimate concerns regarding misinformation and foreign government coercion. I also think that the US government is terrified of losing control of the American people. TikTok is a place where we can organize and share information at lightening speed. I believe that has our government shaking in its boots. A friend of mine who works in managed care was aware that people were heading to the Capitol on January 5th of 2021. She didn’t know they were planning to attack but she did see people posting about it on TikTok. Makes it hard to believe that law enforcement was as blind-sighted as they claimed to be. Drone content that was raging last month has essentially been halted on the platform. You can see tons of #DroneTok videos from December but most new content has been disguised, by Bethenny Frankel, under the hashtag #DiorBag. Bethenny was leading the charge on drone conspiracies and claims to have been shadow banned and reprimanded by TikTok. She started couching her drone content under #DiorBag in an effort to continue the conversation.

Gone are the days of Americans getting their information, in a tidy fashion, from the nightly news. That ship has sailed, but I do think that our government wants to put an end to this high-speed info-sharing highway as a way to reclaim control.
